BRADENTON, FL – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration signed a strategic partnership with Ryan Companies US Inc. to promote worker safety and health during construction of the Lakewood Ranch multi-family housing project in Bradenton.

The partnership seeks to prevent worker injuries and exposure to hazards by developing a contractor-government approach to safety and health. The initiative will also assist contractors in developing and implementing safety and health management systems and providing training to employers, workers and supervisors.

The University of South Florida On-Site Consultation Program will provide cost-free consultative assistance to small employers throughout the partnership.

“Public-private sector partnerships that focus on training and eliminating hazards during major construction projects are proven methods for improving workplace safety and health,” said OSHA Area Office Director Danelle Jindra in Tampa, Florida. “We applaud Ryan Companies US Inc. for developing workplace safety and health programs that focus on preventing exposure to deadly hazards in construction, so that every worker on the project ends their shift safely.”

Participants will focus on identifying and preventing hazards related to falls, struck-by or caught-in materials or equipment. They will also address fire safety, protecting workers from heat illness, silica and noise exposure, and promoting safe work practices when using electrical equipment.

The Lakewood Ranch multifamily project is a 94,000-square-foot apartment complex that includes 502 apartments, a clubhouse with a pool and community amenities.

OSHA’s Strategic Partnership Program works with employers, employees, professional and trade associations, labor organizations and other interested stakeholders to establish specific goals, strategies and performance measures to improve worker safety and health.
