ATLANTA – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration signed a strategic partnership with Balfour Beatty Construction to promote worker safety and health during construction of the 1018 West Peachtree Project in Atlanta.

The partnership seeks to prevent worker injuries and exposure to hazards by developing a contractor-government approach to safety and health. The initiative will also assist contractors in developing and implementing safety and health management systems, and providing training to employees, employers and supervisors.

The Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute’s Safety, Health and Environmental Program is supporting the partnership effort.

“Public-private sector partnerships that focus on training and eliminating hazards during major construction projects are proven methods for eliminating hazards and improving workplace safety and health for workers,” said OSHA Area Office Director Jeffery Stawowy in Atlanta-West. “We applaud Balfour Beatty Construction for its commitment to workplace safety and to ensuring every worker on the project ends their shift safely.”

Participants will focus on identifying and preventing hazards related to falls, struck-by or caught-in materials or equipment. They will also address fire safety, protecting workers from heat illness, silica and noise exposure, and promoting safe work practices when using electrical equipment.

The West Peachtree Project is a 39-story apartment tower on a nine-story parking deck, including a ground-level restaurant and retail establishments. The project consists of cast-in-place concrete and metal framing, with various exterior components including metal panels, window walls, and exterior insulation finishing systems.

OSHA’s Strategic Partnership Program works with employers, employees, professional and trade associations, labor organizations and other interested stakeholders to establish specific goals, strategies and performance measures to improve worker safety and health.
