WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the availability of up to $5 million in grant funding to improve workers’ ability to exercise their labor rights in the agricultural supply chains in Guatemala and Honduras and the textile/apparel – or maquila – sector of El Salvador.
Administered by the department’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs, the funding opportunity supports the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to promote respect for, and compliance with labor rights in the region. It is also part of broader funding allocated in the administration’s Strategy to Address the Root Causes of Migration in Central America.
Funding for the project will be used to help worker organizations train, represent and advocate for agricultural and maquila workers, empower workers to exercise their labor rights and increase engagement by workers and worker organizations with government authorities and employers to negotiate, address and resolve workers’ rights concerns.
