WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of nearly $17 million in funding contracts to seven organizations to promote Registered Apprenticeships in emerging industries where they have not been scaled traditionally and to continue to expand in industries where they exist currently.

Administered by the department’s Employment and Training Administration, the funding will enable these industry intermediaries to launch, promote and expand multi-employer Registered Apprenticeship models in critical industries. These organizations will include a focus on increasing career pathways, particularly for underrepresented populations, in education and the care economy, clean energy, cybersecurity, hospitality and transportation.

“Today’s funding award will support important efforts to expand the use of the proven Registered Apprenticeship model in our school systems, and to meet demands for skilled workers in emerging industries such as clean energy, cybersecurity and other  industries critical to our nation’s economy,” said Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su. “These initiatives align with the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to providing all workers with access to career pathways to family-sustaining salaries.”

Previously, the department announced the availability of funding that seeks to do the following:

Expand Registered Apprenticeship opportunities to address shortages in K-12 education and create more opportunities in emerging industries, including early childhood education and clean energy.
Increase the percentage of Registered Apprenticeship opportunities in industries such as cybersecurity, hospitality and transportation.
Accelerate opportunities for underrepresented populations, including women, people of color and people with disabilities; and underserved communities, including veterans, justice-involved people, youth and people in rural communities.
